Other Instrument Numbers
This section has been included at the instigation of a regular contributor to these pages Hugh Clayton [HC]. He has encountered a number of other instruments manufactured by Watson, bearing serial numbers. This section is included in the hope that some sort of relationship might eventually be established between various departments numbering systems.

12764 Plate Camera - Whole Plate Mahogany Camera. 313. Holborn High St. Bearing plate "A. B. Nowell". The camera is in a leather-covered lead-lined carry case, with leather shoulder strap, and with the owner's initials embossed on the top, and also the name A.B. Nowell hand written in ink above it. In the case are four double-sided dark slides, with an intricate folding mechanism to allow the fully extended slide to roll back over the top of the unit: these are numbered 1-8, on ivory or bone, and have serial numbers on three of the four. The fourth one is a darker wood than the others and could have been purchased seperately. There are 3 inserts for the slides which will convert whole plate to half plate and 3 for quarter plate. There is also the original dark cloth (two sided, in yellow and brown-green), with a small black elastic loop to fit round the lens, a removable wooden lens plate, and a spare, and a lens in an individual leather case, also bearing the same 3 initials. The camera has brass fittings, and black leather bellows. To prevent eithr the camera or dark slides being damaged when removed from the lead case, there are four removable red plush velvet covered card inserts with leather tabs which line the box.
The lens which is a Series III No.4 F-240mm has the serial 104579. On the front of the lens is what appears to be a filter with a different name and serial - Doppel-Anastigmat D.R.P. No. 74437. The dark slides bear serial 12356.
In a seperate case, also bearing intials A.B.N. are the three extendable legs of the tripod which fits the revolving plate beneath the camera. [BS]
